About Us
The Rovers is a family oriented junior football club established in 1970 and fielding teams in every age group from Under 9 through to Under 16 in the Eastern Football League (EFL).
Our club has a long and successful history in the WJFA, having won more Premierships and Best & Fairest Awards than any other club. We are very proud of the fact that we also won the prestigious WJFA Presidents Trophy for the best organized club in the association more often than any other club.
The club moved to the EFL in 2001 (Under 15 and Under 16 teams) and all other teams moved in 2002. Our Under 16 team won the club's first EFL premiership in 2003 and has enjoyed success in a number of age groups since.
The Rovers believe that the individual player should be encouraged and this fosters self-confidence and self esteem.
Mutual respect, trust and working towards common goals are important life skills that our players gain - these qualities grow in the team environment.
The Rovers believe that only suitable, qualified coaches undertake coaching duties. Our coaches therefore have either at least Level 1 qualification, or undertake to do so. The club also has firm policies (which can be accessed in this site) regarding playing in the correct age group, the wearing of mouth guards, player and parent behavior, no alcohol rule at our ground during games and the strong encouragement of parent involvement in all aspects of the matches played.
The Rovers has been very successful in fostering the skills of players who have subsequently played in the AFL. Some of the former Rovers, who have played in the AFL, are Adam Morgan, Duncan and Andrew Kellaway, Mark Chaffey, Stuart Maxfield and Simon Garlick. Many of our Under 16 players are invited to play with Oakleigh Chargers, which is a stepping stone for future AFL players.
Social activities at the Rovers are outstanding. Team events include pie nights, special activity nights and end of season trips. Almost every weekend of the season, players, friends and parents meet at the clubrooms for a Sunday night BBQ and during the year we hold our Annual Dinner Dance.
The club is in a sound financial position and our subscription fees are held as low as possible to ensure players can join our club, even when finances are tight. The fee generally covers the usual team expenses, so that further requests for funds are avoided. The generous support of our sponsors helps the club to keep fees low.
The club runs one of Victoria's Top 40 Auskick clinics with more than 180 registered Auskickers in 2008 coming along each Saturday morning to develop their skills.
Junior football games are played on Sundays and all interested players and parents are warmly invited to come along and enjoy first hand the friendship of the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club.
