Kyle Smale Best Clubman Award for 2004 CHRISTOPHER MERCOVICH
Games Played: 115
Christopher Mercovich is nominated for the Kyle Smale Best Clubman Award for 2004.
Christopher started his football career with the Glen Waverley Rovers Under 9 team and has played 115 games for the club. In all that time, Chris has been an enthusiastic and popular member of each of his teams, showing commitment and loyalty to the club, his teammates and his coaches. Although quiet by nature, he is a happy, well-mannered and mature young man.
Chris has been a fine ambassador for the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club but in particular, over the last few years, Chris has willingly put his own time into the club, helping others rather than himself.
Chris has assisted at Auskick Clinics, Lightning Premierships, McHappy Days and Super Skills Days and has also been the water carrier for the Under 9 team in 2001. His participation in that team is not just about doing a particular task but rather being a positive role model for the young players, all of who are just starting their football careers. The young players see Chris as a senior player in the club and are familiar with his positive, enthusiastic and well rounded personality - the impact that players like Chris have on the younger teams is very powerful.
Chris is awarded the Kyle Smale Medal in 2004 because he embodies what our club is all about - enjoying the participation in football and then generously giving time and effort back to the club. Further, his fine personal qualities make him a fitting recipient of the award, which is of course a tribute to Kyle Smale, a very loved and generous past player of the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club.
Congratulations Chris, accept this important award and continue being a very fine ambassador for the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club.
WJFA Representative in U11
Involved in Auskick clinics for past seasons Participated in McHappy day in past years Participated in Lightning premiership & Super skill days in past years Involved in Under 11 Team as Water carrier 2004

LIFE MEMBERSHIP 2004 - LEW PARKER
The following nomination for life membership of the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club was ratified at the 2004 Annual General Meeting. Well done Lew! Lew is continuing to help the club...even though his son Ben has finished playing with Rovers!
Lew Parker will be retiring from the General Committee this year after being an active committee member for many years. In addition, Lew has been Team Manager of the current Under 16 Team for most of the years his son has been playing.
Lew has also acted as Team Manager for his oldest sons team, so he has had considerable impact on many families who have been part of the Rovers community over many years.
Lew has a quiet approach to issues, but he undertakes all activities with the utmost care and attention to detail. He is thorough in his preparation for the teams he has managed and ensures that all aspects of his football activities are executed to the highest standard.
Lews high standards have had a positive impact on the club, as he demonstrates that high standards should be the norm and not the exception.
He has the ability to relate to all people, which helps to make strong and happy teams, where there is little conflict and there is a sense of fairness underpinning the team itself.
Lew is a ready volunteer for many of the committee activities, attending events reliably unless he has work commitments. Importantly, his influence on matters before the general committee is characterised by common sense, respect for club values and traditions and always, overall fairness. His sense of humour has defused the occasional awkward situation and he particularly enjoys the camaraderie and banter that is part of a football club. Coaches have enjoyed having the Worlds Best Team Manager co-ordinating the teams activities.
Lew has been a consistent and tireless worker for the Rovers, over an unusually long period of time. Lews personal values embody the ethos of the Rovers, he has earned the respect and affection of the players and the parents who been part of his teams and he has encouraged many parents to become involved in club activities, indirectly adding to their enjoyment of the club.
In nominating Lew Parker for Life Membership, the Rovers acknowledge Lews very significant contribution to our club and perhaps most importantly, his quiet demonstration of the core values that the Rovers community embodies.
In summary, Lew has demonstrated not only the capacity for significant and sustained involvement with the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club but also the personification of the important core values that are at the heart of the Rovers. Lews elevation to Life Member is a very fitting tribute to his contribution and will be a tangible way to continue his association with the Rovers. |

LIFE MEMBERSHIP 2003 - BERNARD WEEKES
At the conclusion of the 2003 presentation night, the following motion was read, which outlines the reasons why Bernard Weekes received the Rovers highest honour: Life Membership.
"It is proposed to bestow Life membership of the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club to Mr Bernard Weekes for his outstanding service to the club.
As a matter of record, Bernard has provided a style of leadership that is quite unique. He has introduced a professional way of addressing the range of issues that confront our junior sporting club - the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club.
His presidency has overseen the examination of all activities in the club, both on the field and off the field, the formulation of improved ways of managing these issues and finally, the diligence in ensuring that the issues as defined are delivered, measured and reviewed.
Bernard's leadership style is single minded and determined however he is receptive to the ideas of others and is inclusive when articulating the way forward. He has high personal standards and assumes that these standards become bench marks for the whole club.
During the first days of Bernard's term as president he led the review of the club's then current position in the Waverley Junior Football Association, he explored the range of options available to the club and finally, acted on the recommendation of the Rovers community that the club join the Eastern Football League. He managed the transition process, demonstrating to the Eastern Football League that the Glen Waverley Rovers were a club of substance and indeed would be an important asset of the league.
Bernard ensured that the outcomes of the club's activities were scrutinised and improved. These processes have involved a considerable effort on Bernard's part. In many cases he provided the expertise to improve the relevant process. In many other cases, people from the Rovers community have contributed their own considerable expertise and effort, partly in response to the examples of "work ethic" and "passion" shown by Bernard.
Without doubt, the majority of people involved in the Rovers Football Club have been inspired to improve their own contributions to the club, in part because of the higher standards that have been articulated by Bernard and also in part by the sense of loyalty and respect that has been inspired by Bernard's selfless example.
True leaders encourage others to be part of the journey and Bernard has indeed encouraged others. He is the glue that binds sponsors, supporters, families, players and other stakeholders into what is known as the Rovers family. His respect for the past achievements of earlier members of the Rovers community has encouraged some of our pioneers to become involved again.
The nomination of Bernard for Life Membership of the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club is not only a significant honour for him and his family but a way in which the entire Rovers community can humbly say thank you to a much admired and loved member of our community.
This motion was moved by Nick Mayes and seconded by Adrian Keane on Tuesday 19th August 2003. The GWRJFC committee approved the motion unanimously by email and the motion will be recorded officially at the committee meeting to be held on October 20th 2003".
From the Rovers community, Bernard - congratulations and well done! |

Rovers to stay at Brentwood Reserve Despite overwhelming support from Rovers families and friends, the Monash Council has decided that the Rovers must stay at Brentwood reserve. In the wake of this decision the Rovers committee will move forward planning for a successful 2006 at our current home. If you have any question on this matter please contact a commitee member. Back to Top Rovers propose to relocate to Central Reserve Glen Waverley Rovers JFC (GWRJFC) have been approached by Mazenod Old Collegians FC (MOCFC) to relocate and become long term co-tenants at Central Reserve, Glen Waverley, commencing season 2006.
The GWRJFC Committee has been investigating this proposal over the last month, and are now sufficiently informed to unanimously recommend that GWRJFC relocate to Central Reserve. To this end the committee has submitted a proposal to the Monash council to relocate, and with councils approval and the approval of our members, that will be our new home ground commencing season 2006.
The Committee sees this as an exciting opportunity, which provides the club with facilities which will be the envy of all junior football clubs across metropolitan Melbourne.
More detials are available in the attached letter from the club president.
In order to include the members in this decision, an open evening is planned at Central Reserve (cnr Waverley and Springvale Roads, Glen Waverley) on Monday 14th November (6 7.30 pm) so that members can inspect the facilities, followed by an email postal vote (details attached) closing at 5pm Sunday 27th November 2005.

Bernard Weekes (Club President), the committee and all of the Rovers community extend a very warm welcome to our new families for season 2005. For many of you this will be a long association with the Rovers and we're sure that you will enjoy watching your son or daughter play, we're sure that you will want to assist your team by taking on a role or by fulfilling your rostered duties and lastly by joining in to the social activities (Sunday night barbeques, the Dinner Dance and other events). Everyone starts off as a "newie" and it can be a bit intimidating at first, but please remember that our club can only function if we have plenty of parent volunteering and also very importantly, your support at our functions. The registration fees do not cover our running costs - we have to raise funds in other ways and we want to have some fun along the way! The best thing about the Rovers, besides the enormous footy fun your kids will enjoy, are the friendships you will make - some of which will become life long friendships. That's what community clubs are all about, and all that is needed is your participation... Sunday night functions finish about 7.30 so even your younger children can be home in bed at a reasonable time. So please be an active participant in our Rovers community and feel free to speak to any committee member if you wish to help out in any other way. The "more mature" parents in our club want to make sure that the club continues on via the next generation!
Congratulations to Richard Vandenberg Hard work, study, smarts and travel - Richard Vandenberg appointed captain of Hawthorn Football Club In season 2004, Richie Vandenberg visited the Rovers and spoke to the Under 11s, Under 13s and Under 16s. We hope to see more of Richie during 2005 - the following article appeared in The Age on February 2, 2005. Richie, congratulations from the Rovers community...you are a great role model for all our Rovers players and you will be a respected leader at Hawthorn. By Stephen Rielly Hawthorn's new captain had his footballing lowpoint last year, but it has not stopped his rise to the top. Richie Vandenberg grew up in the tiny irrigation town of Coomealla, 20 kilometres outside Mildura, the first of three sons Peter and Pam Vandenberg raised on a farm that once rode, like the nation itself, on the sheep's back but is today given over to a more contemporary export, wine. It is worth remembering, because in the middle of last season Vandenberg's story, in the minds of the football public at least, did not begin there. It began instead on the June afternoon he wailed into Essendon at the MCG, igniting a brawl that earned him notoriety and a six-match suspension. Instantly, there was no Vandenberg-past people could, or wanted, to recall, no memory of him other than the imprint of those graphic images football fans condemned but watched avidly all the same. To start and stop the Vandenberg story there, though, was akin to picking up a book mid-way through, as his elevation to the Hawthorn captaincy on Monday confirmed. Vandenberg is, as perhaps only his family, friends and Hawthorn people knew at the time, about as far from the stereotypical footballer, let alone thuggish footballer, as Coomealla is from inner-city sophistication. Three years ago, as a 25-year-old, he acquired his own parcel of land back in the family district, turning it over to chardonnay and shiraz grapes that will produce his first vintage within the fortnight. It is understood that Vandenberg negotiated a slightly reduced contract with the Hawks at the time, in exchange for guaranteed money that has underwritten the operation. He has dedicated several years to renovating his Hawthorn East home in spectacular fashion, a place he shares for the moment with 19-year-old teammate Harry Miller. Last year, as turbulent as it was, Vandenberg completed a finance and economics degree that has finished, for now, a tertiary education that began at the Melbourne University engineering school in 1995. Encouraged, or rather told, by his father to pursue something different in life before returning to the farm as he intended to in his teens, Vandenberg enrolled at Melbourne and opted to have a kick with Uni Blues in the amateurs. This is where he was playing when the Hawthorn recruiting manager of the time, John Turnbull, decided to invest in him as the 78th pick in the national draft of 1997. Turnbull, apparently, was aware that Vandenberg had broken a wrist in a motorbike accident back on the farm, a misguided turn in several senses of the word that kept him from representing Victoria in the national amateur carnival but delivered him to Glenferrie Oval. Vandenberg arrived at Hawthorn in a less than capable state, with his wrist in plaster and the thumb on his other hand bandaged after surgery. Peter Vandenberg's influence on his first son has been profound, as it is said to have been on Ben and Tim, his other boys, who take care of their brother's vineyards in his absence. Richie, like the other two, has travelled extensively at his father's insistence, most recently to South and Central America with Campbell Brown and Sam Mitchell, and people who know the family say has received from his father a determination to be a participant in life and not merely an observer. Several years ago each Hawthorn player was asked by then club psychologist Simon Lloyd to speak of someone he admired. Some spoke of sports stars, others about figures of historical significance. Vandenberg spoke of his father. "It's a family of strong values. When you're brought up in that environment, you can't help but bring that to your own life. Luckily for me, my parents have been great supporters and critics of mine, which is healthy," Vandenberg said in Hobart yesterday, day two of his captaincy. Not unexpectedly, he holds to the belief that football is important but no substitute for life itself, a philosophy that encourages the sort of perspective he may need as the Hawks rebuild under a new coach, Alastair Clarkson, and captain. "In a way, I was fortunate to come into the system as I did. I've enjoyed studying and I think it's important for every footballer to have a life away from the game. My goal was always to find a balance between football, study and the other interests that I have had. I think it holds you in good stead. "I'm not exactly sure how I'm going to maintain the equilibrium now that I've got the captaincy. I'm not sure what my next step is because the experiences that lay ahead aren't written down somewhere for me to prepare for." Vandenberg has, or is offering, modest targets to hit in his first season as skipper. He said on Monday, upon accepting the captaincy, that he wanted the club to return to "positive territory" by which, he explained yesterday, he meant strong development from the first and second-year players and "nothing less than everything we can give". But does he not feel the need to turn the page on his own season of last year? It seems that if people want to continue to think of Vandenberg as the footballer in black, so be it. He knows otherwise. "I think I've only ever tried to go out and be the person I am. True to myself. That might be a quality others believe is appealing, which could explain why I was appointed. But I've never tried to be anything other than I am."

However, second in division A of the very strong EFL compitition is a very commendable achievement, congratulations go to coach Peter Campbell, all the boys, and their parents. We look forward to more and even better results in the years to come from this team.
Under 12'S to play off in GRAND FINAL The Under 12's defeated Baystwater 6.6.42 to 0.3.3 and now play North Ringwood in the EFL Under 12 Division A Grand Final. In a game in heavy conditions, a real team effort saw the Rovers kick three first quarter goals, to control the match, and one more in each quater to finish off a resounding win. This sets up a grand final with a very strong North Ringwood team. The Grand Final will be held at Schramms Reserve, J J Tully Drive, Doncaster, Mel ref. 33 F12 at 10:30 on Sunday, all Rovers families and friends are encouraged to attend and support the boys. RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE POLICY Policy The Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club Inc. is committed to an environment which promotes racial and religious tolerance by prohibiting certain conduct and providing a means of redress for victims of racial and religious vilification and/or racial discrimination. The full RACIAL AND RELIGIOUS TOLERANCE POLICY Policy is available here, is pinned up in the clubrooms and available from the commitee. Please review and adhere to it. TEAM SELECTION POLICY SEASON 2005
The concept of the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club is to provide an equal opportunity for all boys and girls to participate in competition football. However, when numbers are in excess of the required 24 players the following rules should apply when selecting teams:
1. Players who attend training during the week prior to the game should be the first selected. The only exception to this rule is when a player is unable to attend training due to one of the following reasons:
a) Illness and the Coach is advised accordingly.
b) The player is not home from school in time for training however, is participating in other training, or
c) The player is in training with a combined team such as the Oakleigh Chargers or Eastern Ranges Football Clubs or a League Representative Squad or has genuine school commitments that fall on the same night as our organised training night.
All exceptions must be made known to the team when it is announced so that all players, officials and parents are made fully aware of the situation.
2. Schedules recording training attendance are filled in at each training session and returned to the Football Manager at the completion of the season. These schedules will also be used when selecting teams or discussing training attendance with interested parents.
3. Excess players will be rostered off equally during the course of the Season. To assist families with planning a weekend away etc, agreement between the Coach & Parents will be sought.
4. In the younger teams (Under 9s to Under 11s) the players will be rotated during each game. In games the players will participate in a minimum of 2 quarters with every effort to give them 3 quarters. In the older age groups (under 12s & over) every effort will be made to rotate the players so that they get as much game time as possible and selection will be based on training attendance, form, attitude and team balance.
5. When participating in Finals, the Coach & Management Team will select the side to take the field.
LEN WAVERLEY ROVERS JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB WINS THE 2003 MONASH CITY COUNCIL GOLDEN BROOM AWARD Nick Mayes (Club Secretary) attended a club information night at the Monash City Council on Wednesday night, the 12th of November. There was also the presentation of the "Golden Broom Award". This award is for the "Most well maintained Sports Pavilion for the Winter Season 2003" which has been awarded to the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club. More recognition for the "best" Junior Football Club in the Waverley area!
EFL JUNIOR RESENTATION NIGHT The Eastern Football League Junior Presentation night was held on Friday 26th September at the Karralyka Centre in Ringwood with 520 people in attendance. Flags were presented to the grand final winning teams, as well as the best and fairest and runners up being awarded with trophies. The final award of the night was the Gordon Parker Best Conducted Club Award, which this year went to our club, the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club. The best club award is presented to only one club each year, so winning this recognition is a great achievement, particularly considering that the Rovers have been in the EFL for only three years. The award is judged on behaviour on the field, quality of administration and of course the club's values must demonstrate its commitment to junior sport and player devleopment.
EFL SENDS CONGRATULATIONS TO THE ROVERS Rod Cordwell, Junior Football Coordinator for the Eastern Football League sent the following message to the Rovers today (3rd September 2003): "On behalf of the EFL Junior Committee I wish to congratulate your club on a successful season and in particular the under 16B team who won the clubs first EFL grand final. As you are aware your success this year is not only due to the efforts of the players, but the work of your committee, coaches, trainers and supporters. I would appreciate it if you passed on our gratitude to all those involved. Once again thanks for all your efforts and I look forward to working with you in season 2004." Bernard Weekes, Rovers President, said "that it is a pleasure to be part of the EFL, the most professional and well run junior league, without a doubt. The EFL demonstrates that it is truly passionate about junior football and of course ensuring the overall enjoyment of the game by the families and friends of the clubs that make up this great competition" said Bernard. ROVERS UNDER 16S WIN HISTORIC FIRST GRAND FINAL IN EASTERN FOOTBALL LEAGUE Last Sunday our Under 16's made history by becoming the FIRST TEAM to win a Premiership for the MIGHTY ROVERS in the Eastern Football League. The boys played a magnificent game of football by giving Ringwood their first loss for the year by 10 points. On behalf of the Team and Coach Roger Olds, I thank all members of the Rovers Community for coming out in droves to give support to the players. The roar from the crowd when Jono kicked a superb goal 20 seconds into the match would have given the boys a tremendous boost knowing they had great support coming from over the fence. And what a great night we enjoyed at the Clubrooms on Sunday night. A night I will always remember. WELL DONE BOYS , ROGER & THE MANAGEMENT TEAM. Unfortunately, our Under 13' boys went down to a much stronger Chirnside Park earlier in the day. But what a great year the boys have enjoyed by finishing on top of the ladder and only losing 2 games for the year. WELL DONE BOYS, SCOTT & THE MANAGEMENT TEAM. The Under 13 parents are to be congratulated in the way they embraced the Under 16's victory and made the night such a great night for the boys and a lasting memory. To the other families and friends that shared the memory, I thank you from both teams. Let's not forget also our Under 12s who made the preliminary final in A division (it doesn't get any tougher) and the Under 15s who played in the first round of the finals. As a Community, we will be able to acknowledge the Under 16's Premiership at the AGM /Presentation Night. Details below: Venue: Mulgrave Community Centre 355 Wellington Road, MULGRAVE. Date: Tuesday 16th September 2003. Time: 7.00pm Annual General Meeting 7.20pm Special Meeting 7.30pm Presentation Night Glen Waverley Physiotherapy is attending the rooms every Monday and Tuesday night between 6 and 7 pm. These are rehabilitation nights for the Under 15 and Under 16 players, however any player in the club (including runners and trainers!) can visit the physios for a checkup. If your child has an injury or a recurring problem, it is better to have it diagnosed as more often than not, it may be treated inappropriately and either not heal or it may get worse. So please take advantage of our arrangement with Glen Waverley Physiotherapy...another program that is possible because of our sponsors. News from each of the teams can be found in the team sections in our web site. GO ROVERS! |

Back to Top An airborne kick-off for junior footy season. Were used to seeing footballers flying high for the ball, but on Sunday 4 April, theyll be flying even higher in Glen Waverley. A crack team of skydivers will deliver the 2003 U16 premiership flag to the Glen Waverley Rovers Junior Football Club in a drop zone usually reserved for the centre bounce!
According to Club President, Bernard Weekes, this spectacular event will mark an exciting kick off for the Rovers 2004 season and a day of celebrations.
"Weve got lots to celebrate. Were a strong, family oriented club that has worked hard to give local kids an opportunity to participate in a great sport, whatever their ability, and were celebrating the success of our U16 football team, who last year created club history when they won the premiership flag after only two seasons in the Eastern Football League."
The idea for this unique kick off to the season came about after discovering that a 2004 U16 parent, Terry Murphy, is a skilled skydiver. "We thought this would be a great way of celebrating grass roots footy, while drawing attention to the Eastern Football Leagues "Kids 4 Kids Day", aimed at raising funds for the Royal Childrens Hospital Good Friday Appeal," said Mr Weekes.
"We were thrilled that Terry was happy to be involved. Terry and other members of the Skydive Adrenaline Australian Champion Skysurfing Team and Commando skydivers, based at the Tooradin Airstrip, will drop in at the Brentwood Reserve in Maylands Crescent, Glen Waverley at 2pm on Sunday 4 April in a display of skill, precision and safety.

Adrian Keane and his team conducted the Super Skills Day at the Rovers ground last Saturday morning (July 28th) where nearly 200 district Auskick participants enjoyed the skills sessions run by the coaches from TigerZone. Auskick leaders helped the TigerZone coaches and the kids participating tasted another level of footy education. Adrian remarked later that he was very impressed with the way the TigerZone coaches ran the clinics, and so were many of the Auskick coaches.
Club President, Bernard Weekes, received these comments from one of the parents attending on the day: "Thanks to the Rovers for putting on a really valuable program for our kids, we appreciate your assistance and together with the lightning premiership you conduct each year, you are showing that the Rovers is a really great football club. I was really impressed by your professional approach and then we finished off the day with a a free barbeque and drink for the kids. Many thanks."
Bernard said that the Rovers is committed to providing the best environment for our children to be involved in...both as a means of developing sporting skills to the best level for the individual and also in creating a caring and friendly environment for entire families.
Adrian Keane was very pleased with the great participation shown by the Ausckick clinics...the Rovers satisfaction is in seeing kids enjoying their sport, particularly Aussie rules and then moving on and joining the club of their choice to continue their football.
Back to Top SEAN LESTER ACHIEVES STATE SQUAD SELECTION
Sean Lester from the Rovers U12s has been selected as an emergency for the Victorian Primary Schools' State Football Squad to participate in the annual National Primary Schools Championship to be held in Cairns in August 2003. A squad of 23 attend the championships with 2 emergencies in case of injury.
This is the highest representative recognition that primary schoolboys can achieve in football. Each of over 1,200 primary schools throughout Victoria nominated their best 2 footballers that qualified for U12 status. Once nominated, players participated in a series of 6 'knockout' selection trials, including a 2 day camp for the final 50 prior to the final 25 (including emergencies) being selected. The final 25 is made up of 12 from country Victoria and 13 from metro Melbourne.
Only 3 players from the EFL have been selected for the Victorian squad of 25: Sean Lester and two players from Knox Eagles. The Knox boys both play for their club's U13s, making Sean Lester the only selection from the EFL U12 competition.
***Congratulations Sean on achieving a place in the squad - you are a talented player with a great future.***
The Under 12 team now has three players who have played sport at Victorian level - Sean (football), Seb Henderson (softball) and Martin Beecroft (tennis).
Back to Top GLEN WAVERLEY ROVERS SUPPORT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE AT MONASH MEDICAL CENTRE
Club President Bernard Weekes announced that the Rovers would support our nearest Ronald McDonald House by becoming a hundreds and thousands supporter. Bernard said that it is important for all our Rovers community to reflect on the needs of others who are experiencing difficulties in their lives.
"We take for granted our children's fitness and good health, but some kids who may be facing life threatening conditions must travel to Melbourne and be treated at hospitals such as Monash. In many situations, the children and their parents receive great support from Ronald McDonald House, which needs major extensions to cope with the demands it receives", Bernard said.
This Sunday, June 15th, the committee has decided that all the profit from the canteen will be donated to Ronald McDonald House, Clayton.
Support for Ronald McDonald House is in addition to the club's support for Youth Suicide Prevention. It is very important for our young people in the club to know that we can enjoy the good things in life, but we must also help others who may be in need.

Jonathon has already made the first cut down to 35 players (announced on June 11)with the next cut down to 30 on the 3rd July. Our club is very proud of Jonathon's achievements in reaching the VIC. Jonathon has a great footy future in front of him, and whichever pathway his football takes him, the Rovers are behind Jonathon all the way.
